A GIFT IN YOUR WILL
If you want to leave Save our Spaniels a gift in your will, there are different types of gift you can make:
- A ‘pecuniary gift’ which is the gift of a specified sum of money
- A ‘residuary gift’ which is a gift of part (or all) of the value of your estate (after debts, liabilities and other legacies have been paid)
Gifts left in Wills to UK charities are free from inheritance tax, meaning they are removed from the value of your estate before tax is calculated. Additionally, if inheritance tax is payable on your estate then (under the current inheritance tax rules) a gift of 10% of the taxable estate to charity can reduce the rate of inheritance tax from 40% to 36%. We recommend you speak to your solicitor about this when making your will.
Our suggested wording for a gift to Save our Spaniels is:
PECUNIARY LEGACY
“I GIVE to Save our Spaniels (Registered Charity Number: 1173875) of 15 High Street Swinstead Grantham NG33 4PA the sum of £...[amount in words and figures] absolutely and I EXPRESS the wish (but without imposing any binding obligation) that the money be used for its general charitable purposes and I DIRECT that the receipt of the Treasurer or duly authorised officer shall be a valid and appropriate form of discharge to my [executors][trustees].”
RESIDUARY GIFT
“I GIVE to Save our Spaniels (Registered Charity Number: 1173875) of 15 High Street Swinstead Grantham NG33 4PA [x%] [all] of the residue of my estate absolutely and I EXPRESS the wish (but without imposing any binding obligation) that the gift shall be used for its general charitable purposes and I DIRECT that the receipt of the Treasurer or duly authorised officer shall be a valid and appropriate form of discharge to my [executors][trustees].”
